Fall Beauty Checklist

The time has come where we followers of fashion are cleaning out our closets, chanting “out with the old, in with the new,” boldly trying a new trend or look. Yes, September, dually known as the “January of fashion”, is right around the corner and we are all getting ready to set our fashion new year's resolutions in motion. This coming month, women worldwide will be scouring through the biggest magazine issues of the year to see what’s hot, what’s not and where they will fall on the line. But amidst all of the excitement, be mindful that September is not just a special time for your closet; your beauty bag wants some of the love too. Take this opportunity to try out bold new looks for your hair and makeup but do so with everything you need to protect your skin and hair from the cold weather that is to come. Here is your beauty checklist; don’t start fall without everything you need!

The past year has been revolutionary since the launch of lash-enhancing products. The beauty world is going crazy over lashes since products like Latisse and RevitaLash have landed on the market, ready to aid those with thin eyelashes. This fall is all about intense lashes so use products that will not only enhance but also intensify lashes. Also on the market is Kate Somerville’s True Lash Lash Enhancing Eye Makeup Remover, so you can keep your eyes healthy and clean while continuing to work towards getting that super glam look that you want.

Spend time basking in the sun this summer? If so, you’re probably beautifully bronzed. While it looks great to have sun-kissed skin, the effects aren’t always so great. Clogged pores and uneven skin tone are common to those who have spent lots of time in the sun. Combat those effects by exfoliating regularly. Prep for the upcoming season by gently scrubbing skin to reveal a fresh face for fall.

While we’re discussing facial care, we can’t forget to moisturize. Moisturizing really goes hand-in-hand with exfoliating. While I preach about moisturizing regularly year-round, it’s especially important during the fall and winter months to protect and hydrate your skin.

While we’re talking about moisturizing, why stop at your face? The only way to keep skin looking luminous and feeling supple when the elements are working against you is to moisturize regularly. While lightweight body lotions are primarily used throughout the summer, the cooler months require super-emollient moisturizer; or, if you’re feeling bold, try a luxe body oil!

What’s worse than chapped lips? I can’t think of many things that will send you on a downward beauty spiral faster. Keep lips happy and hydrated with lip balm, but amplify that happiness to excitement by adding a tint to the hydration.

Your smile is your most recognizable accessory and you have to play it up every chance you get. No one wants to go into fall with mother-of-pearl colored teeth; it ruins any lip color you may be trying as soon as you open your mouth. Make sure your teeth are at their whitest without costing you a small fortune by using an at-home whitening system.

Expired Beauty

Makeup has many positive attributes, but not many are cognizant of its few pitfalls, expiration dates being one of the biggest. Most products are designed to last anywhere from 12-18 months at best, but that doesn't mean they can't become contaminated before then. Germ-prone areas such as your eyes, mouth and fingers are in constant contact with your makeup or its applicators, making them breeding grounds for bacteria that can cause more serious dermatological issues. As a general makeup rule of thumb, you should dispose of any makeup, cleansers or moisturizers that have changed color, consistency or develop a bad odor.

Here are the most common makeup items in your bag that you may want to think about replacing:

Mascara

Mascara should be tossed after three months without fail. The tube is a breeding ground for bacteria. We all have "microbial eyelash mites" and if we continue to use the same mascara on them for a long period of time, they can clog up and cause an infection.

Eyeshadow

The general rule with eye shadow and liners is that if it is liquid, it ought to be replaced a maximum of six months following purchase. For liner pencils and powder eye shadows, these really should be replaced inside a year.

Eyeliner

Pencils can last several years unless you wet the tip with saliva or water. You can nearly triple the lifespan of your pencils by sharpening them every so often to keep them sanitized. The warmth of the sharpening friction can also keep the pigment softer for a longer period of time. However, if the lip or eye pencil starts to crumble or is severely dry that it can no longer glide on your skin properly, it’s time for a new one.

Foundation

Cream or liquid concealer and foundations can last up to a year if you use a sponge to apply it. Otherwise, b
oth foundation and concealers should be thrown out six months after purchase. If you notice a funny smell or if the concealer or foundation begins to separate - part of the concealer will look like water and the other will be thick and dry - you really should throw it out immediately. Shake up the bottles every so often so the product doesn't start to separate early. You can tissue off the top layer of these powders every so often to keep the colors fresh and bacteria-free. Loose powders should be thrown away a year after purchase. If your stick concealer or foundation becomes dry and starts to break apart when you use it, it’s a sign that bacteria is forming. If the texture and pigment begin to change and you find it harder to use the product, toss it.

Blush

Powder blush should be discarded a year after purchase. If you notice excessive clumping or flaking of the blush, then you really should throw it out and replace it.

Lipstick

Lipstick and Lipgloss typically last 6 to 8 months, but wiping off the bullet with a tissue and 70% alcohol every so often to sanitize can lengthen the lifespan by up to 14 months. If you see beads of formula separating on the lipstick or the product becomes harder and drier, it’s time for a new one. With lipgloss, the constant swiveling and swishing in and out of the container is another breeding ground for collecting bacteria. If the gloss changes in its taste and smell, toss it. If the gloss has a doe-foot applicator, it’s best to throw it out when it hits 6 months.

Facial cleansers and moisturizers

Cleansers and moisturizers often contain fatty acids, which can turn rancid quickly. Toss after six months.

Your overall health and skin health depends on your makeup and routinely sorting though it and discarding expired products. The next time you go to a store to acquire your makeup make sure to look for the expiration date on the box or bottle of the product. It may also be a good practice to p
ut plainly visible expiration date labels on your makeup products to know when to throw them out. Also, be sure to store your cosmetics in a cool, dry place outside of the bathroom to extend their shelf life.

So if you have makeup sitting around that you’ve had for a while, go ahead and get rid of it and replace it. Your skin will thank you and it’s always great to try new products!

5 Fabulous Drug Store Beauty Finds

As a girl on the go and on a budget, I don’t always have the time or funds to track down the highest heralded beauty products. Fortunately, with a little bravery and a lot of beauty savvy, I've been able to find some really amazing products at the local drugstore that will blow your mind without blowing your budget. Here are a few of my favorites:

Mascara

Mascara is one of the best beauty finds at your local drugstore. I like to use Covergirl Lash Blast for fuller-looking eyelashes, and then I achieve just the right color, separation and length by combining it with Covergirl Eye Exacts Mascara for brown eyes. With all the formulas, brands and brushes available, play around to find the mascara that is just right for you without having to spend a ton!

Dry Shampoo

When I first heard about dry shampoo I was a little skeptical to say the least. However, after giving it a go I realized that its not intended for everyday use, and definitely not meant to replace washing your hair. Its great for the occasional morning that you wake up late, or if you have a quick turnaround between the gym and dinner. Spraying a little dry shampoo on my roots gives my hair a light, fresh feeling between washes and it works the same way for most, if not all, hair types. I like Suave Dry Shampoo especially because it smells great and can be purchased for around $3!

Lip Gloss/Lipstick

I've found that the best way to try out a new lip color trend is by purchasing less expensive options. This method is good for a number of reasons but namely because there’s no real commitment. If you try a color (or combination of colors) that you like that is also carried by a favorite high-end brand, splurge on it; but not before test-driving a few of the more budget-friendly versions first.

Jergens Natural Glow

Jergens Natural Glow is a great product for those who enjoy tanning but don't want to expose themselves to the negative effects. As long as it is applied evenly over the entire body, there is no streaky or orange-y look to it. Through daily use it gradually gives skin a darker appearance. It is offered in three shades and is even offered in skin firming formulas, as well as a formula specifically for your face. This product really is a 2-for-1; you get a great moisturizer and a tan all in one bottle!

Olay Regenerist Thermal Contour and Lift

Short of getting a spa treatment, there is nothing better than Olay Regenerist Thermal Contour and Lift. Even after my first use I instantly saw and felt the difference. My skin was firmer, yet supple and hydrated. Application is easy and it doesn't take much time, with results sure to amaze you for what it costs. I can’t imagine life without it!
