This Trend Just In: 2011 MTV VMA Red Carpet's Best - and Worst - Dressed

This past weekend, MTV aired its 2011 VMA Awards, causing many age-groups to tune-in for what could now be classified as another awkward awards show full of live moments, some good and some cringe worthy. But before anyone knew all of this, there were many varied reasons to tune in: for the performance line-up, to see who won the once coveted "moon man" awards or for what the celebrities chose to wear upon arrival. Keeping in line with that, today's trend post will try to focus on the "black carpet" looks. Some were good, some were great and some were just...well, you'll see.

The Best

Demi Lovato sparkled in this silver low-cut Mandalay minidress, Christian Louboutin platforms and full of body-and-bounce loose curls.

Once you get past the cube adorning Katy Perry's colorful Christian Dior ensemble, you can see how the geometric patterned-outfit is on trend with color blocking and mixing, yet matching, patterns.

Beyonce wore this beautiful bright and flowy one-shouldered Lanvin gown with bold statement jewelry and platform heels.

Her best accessory by far that evening had to be her growing baby bump that she highlighted on the carpet.

She later hit the stage in this purple-sequined Dolce & Gabbana tux.

Beyonce's former Destiny's Child group-member Kelly Rowland also dazzled upon her arrival in this Falguni & Shane Peacock dress, made up of a mix of feathers and leather. She accentuated the look with tasteful - yet ample - cleavage and Christian Louboutin peep-toe stilettos.

Adele has become a household name with her soulful voice and wore this custom Barbara Tfank dress with a triangular embellishment along the neckline. Her "kicky" bouffant and heels add height and balance to her look.

Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi actually looks as pulled-together as she may ever get in this cleavage enhancing gilded strapless gown which she accentuated with sparkly gold heels and jewelry.

Britney Spears gets a pass in this zig-zag pattered, thigh-grazing Moschino romper, but where fault is found is in the open-toed patent-leather platform boots. They're (literally) one step away from the strip club.

Zoe Saldana keeps things short and to the point in this barely there black Barbara Bui dress with a metallic bodice and leather-edged cap sleeves.

Barbara Bui also designed her ankle-strap, python platform heels. Absolutely superb.

Newly-married Kim Kardashian is "back to work", wearing this KaufmanFranco silver-beaded gown that's not only cleavage-y but the sheer back panel heightens her, umm, "ass"ets. Did Mr. Humphries approve this look before she left the house?

Life without Ashlee Simpson seems to 'suit' Pete Wentz well, as he arrived looking clean shaven and eye-liner free in this quite dapper slim gray suit and pointy patent-leather shoes.

Taylor Lautner's teen-heartthrob days will continue to beat strong so long as he continues to wear outfits as simple as a blazer, unbuttoned-to-there Henley shirt, skinny jeans and boots. The look is appropriate for the event, and for his 'Team Jacob' fans.

Justin Bieber takes a risk, but wins in this pairing of red skinny jeans, tuxedo jacket and leopard-print sneakers. He accessorized with glasses (that seemed more for function than fashion), a YSL brooch, gold chains and get this, a real snake!

Joe Jonas also seemed to get the fitted black blazer memo, but decided to one-up his celeb friends by bedazzling the lapel. He paired it with a white shirt but then added blue jeans (that he presumably got from a female fan) and black shoes. It works for Joe though...

The Busted

Both of Katy Perry's outfits for the night were interesting, but this 'Memoirs of a Forgotten Geisha' look is a bit too faux-oriental for taste. The Asian-inspired Atelier Versace mini-dress with matching parasol looks gimmicky, not to mention matching her pink, strappy Jimmy Choo heels with her new pink hued 'do.

'Rainbow Bright' is rolling over in her animated grave as Deena Cortese of 'Jersey Shore' fame decided to not only taste the rainbow, but dress herself in its likeness. Once she's done with this dress there is a drag queen out there that would love to wear this for a gay pride event...or not.

Liz Lee is the star of MTV's "My Life as Liz" which must be a cover for her true career as the lead singer in a grunge band. That's the only explanation for why it looks like she got dressed in the back of a van, turning this simple tie-dyed sheet into a makeshift dress and would also explain why she couldn't find her heels.

Skylar Grey may be talented vocally but this look is confusing visually. First, there's the mock-neck-sleeveless-almost-mid-drift sweater-thing that's the most off-putting of crusty-mustard. If that's not bad enough she then paired said top with the most chic prison-striped pants she could find, complete with a wallet chain. Her platform boots are cool, but at this point, they're too little too late.

Lil' Mama is no stranger to being called out on her wacky fashion, but this dress isn't half bad. What is bad is that wig borrowed from the set of a 1970's blaxploitation film and those wedges with a wedge missing.

Katie Holmes seems to be trying to relive her 'Joey Potter' days in this lace-topped Azzedine Alaia dress, but the stance, nor the dress (or those shoes!) are working in her favor. At least she came to the event looking better than she did in this post.

Ne-Yo gets props for always trying to reinvent the 'gentleman' look, but this shimmery, umber-hued Prada top, paired with a shirt buttoned ALL THE WAY UP (sans tie) with an old-school fedora and oversized sunglasses are not as "dapper" as he'd like us to believe.

Even as her alter ego, Jo Calderone, Lady Gaga can't stay off the bad end of the red carpet dressed list. The look is simple enough, but the dingy-looking Uniqlo T-shirt, Brooks Brothers pants and Dior Homme jacket just look like she stepped off the stage from an off Broadway production of "Jersey Shore Side Story".

Rapper Kreayshawn has somehow found a way to pay homage to both Mickey Mouse and Amy Winehouse in this sequin-splattered frock that she finishes off with red Nikes. This look is definitely in need of 'Rehab'.

JoJo makes a serious 'no no' in this leather corseted dress that would have been fine, except for the unfortunate mistake she made of attaching two Hefty bags of trash to either side of her. Guess it makes it that much easier to toss after the show.

There is compassion for Jessie J's broken foot, but none for this glittery showgirl outfit. Ke$ha must be pissed she stole half her sparkle stash to jazz up her would-be somber bodysuit, flesh-toned tights and crutches.

This Roberto Cavalli gown ages 18-year-old Miley Cyrus almost beyond recognition. Besides the fact that it seems too dressy for the event, she looks like a girl playing dress-up in her mother's clothing. The Lorraine Schwartz choker and up-do seal the idea that this outfit will one day be appropriate for her...just not for another decade.

Selena Gomez must have thought it was Halloween when she decided to wear this lacy Julien Macdonald gown, gold Brian Atwood pumps and Judith Leiber clutch. If she would have waited just a little longer to wear this she would have made a phenomenal Elvira.

And here's the best of the worst for last. Nicki Minaj is known as much for her gimmicky costumes as her rapping skills, but this is taking it a tad too far. It looks like she just woke up from a 'Hello Kitty' slumber party that was in the path of a SARS outbreak.

This Trend Just In: Sweat with Style

For most celebrities, being caught wearing sweats would get you to the top of the "worst dressed" list faster than many other sartorial crimes, but in this instance, sweats are being touted as the new "go-to" items in your closet. But like any trend, there are good examples...and flat out bad ones. Lets look at how the celebrities featured below shape-up in their athletic wear.

The right way

Rihanna was spotted arriving at LAX ready to take flight in a coordinated casual look, topping it off with a covetable Prada denim bag.

Paris Hilton was one of the pioneers of the "juicy couture velour suit" trend and now the heiress mixes and matches a casual t-shirt and pant that just happen to match her convertible Bentley. Coincidence? Think not.

Lupe Fiasco wore this Comme des Garcons t-shirt from the Spring/Summer '11 line with ankle skimming pants and slip on shoes. He further accessorized the look with designer shades, necklace and a Gucci signature-banded watch for a casual-meets-costly laid back look.

Giselle Bunchen looks model-esque even coming from the gym!

Nicole Kidman was caught wearing this casual ensemble that she pulled together with layered tee's and stylish sunglasses that coordinate with her bag.

Looks like Lauren Conrad's got her hands full, but it doesn't seem to be slowing her down as she powers through her morning in an outfit that says, "I just finished working out but I can still run a few errands wearing this before heading home to, where else? 'The Hills'".

Days before her wedding, Kim Kardashian stepped up her workout game but she didn't let the paparazzi see her sweat - or drop her sense of style. Hermes Birkin as a gym bag? That's haute.

Katy Perry recently flew to Sydney, Australia in this beige Chanel track suit that she paired with Marc Jacobs flats and a classic Chanel 2.55 bag. Who knew Chanel made lounge wear?

The wrong way

Sienna Miller is an A-List beauty, but this disheveled look gets a "T" for "Terrible".

There's no excuse for Katie Holmes to step out dressed like this. Even if her house was on fire.

Ashley Tisdale's laid-back look isn't so bad, but the oversized shorts and baggy tank top do little for her toned frame. Love the Alexander Wang 'Coco' Duffel bag though.

Jennifer Love Hewitt is no stranger to bad candid photos and this beyond casual pairing of Wildfox's wildly popular t-shirt and Free City baggy sweats doesn't help her case. You need more than just coffee Love. Lots more.

Renee Zellweger seems to have no casual clothing. She's either supper glam for the red carpet or extremely dressed-down when running errands. Find that middle road Renee and run with it!

Miley Cyrus's laid-back look isn't as bad as some of the outfits she's worn, but it screams, "I just woke up and I'm meeting Jennifer Love Hewitt for coffee."

Mischa Barton chose to wear these unflattering cut-off sweats (that at first glance appear to have stains on them, but under further inspection are they discovered to be rabbit silhouettes) while out picking up what can only be another calorie-laden lunch. At least her hair looks good!

This Trend Just In: Pattern with a Purpose

Every season features at least one covetable pattern, but this summer pattern matching (and mix-matching) is a trend taken from the fall season that seems to also work well with warm weather wear. Since the heat doesn't allow for layering patterns as much, many designers have taken queues and either combined patterns into one single-layer ensemble or created a pattern or print to create visually stunning - yet wearable - optical illusions.

Women

Rose Byrne attended the MoMA Celebratory Dinner in a Peter Pilotto chiffon river print dress and Brian Atwood 'Betsey' sandals.

Jessica Alba was out (showing off her baby bump) in a button-down chiffon striped and spotted dress from Chris Benz Resort 2012.

Minka Kelly wore a green mixed print dress by Etro to Comic Con. Long and loose wavy hair and nude platform pumps complete the look.

TV personality turned reality starlet Lala Vazquez-Anthony wore this baby floral patterned bubble dress from Zara while out running errands.

Gillian Zinser was seen on the set of '90210' in this Maxi Floral Print Dress.

Debra Messing was seen strolling on the beach in this breezy white-black-and red patterned dress.

Catherine Zeta-Jones wore this vibrant multi-colored cover-up with a thigh-high slit while relaxing in the French Riviera.

Marion Cotillard wore this rather shapeless - yet well proportioned - Thakoon red patterned short 'tent' tunic dress with asymmetrical hem on the red carpet.

Madonna's daughter Lourdes looks all grown up in this All Saints Collection dress.

US Vogue's Editor Anna Wintour wore this taffeta print cocktail dress from Balenciaga's 2012 Resort collection for a premiere, complete with a beaded necklace and her signature bob and sunglasses.

During their whirlwind North American tour, Kate Middleton attended the Foundation Polo Challenge event with Prince William wearing a marble gray hand painted chinoiserie silk dress from Jenny Packham's Spring 2011 collection.

Glee's Jayma Mays worked the watercolored carpet for the Critics' Choice Awards in this watercolor print strapless Elise Overland dress, vibrant orange clutch and nude platforms.

Nikki Reed donned an Etro tribal inspired print maxi dress for the Teen Choice Awards.

Men

There are a few (brave) men who've embraced the trend and although their pairings can be considered much more watered down than their female counterparts, their interpretation is as spot on as you'd expect, with a few unexpected pattern pairings all in the name of fun - and fashion!

Pharrell Williams was seen wearing his own Ice Cream branded shorts.

Its a fashion face-off for the fellas! Here we see David Beckham and Adam Levine in this Ralph Lauren 'Navajo' inspired shawl collared sweater. Who do you think wore it better?

Kanye West wore this now infamous Celine blouse to perform at Coachella.

RuPaul paired this plaid suit with cowboy boots, striped shirt and flower for a Jimmy Choo for H&M event. Is this pattern pairing too busy or just right?
